My 1994 Jeep Grnd Cheroke will start but won't move when I give it gas.....????
Car has always ran fine. Took it to get the smog check yesterday and it passed. On the way home from work after driving 30 miles at 65 it popped and jerked twice but still kept running without resistance. When I got off the freeway I stopped and when I went to press on the gas the car squeeled, popped a couple more times and started smoking a very small amount with a smell of burning.I pulled it over. There was water leaking somewhat heavily from the mid front of the car. I started it again in many different 4 wheel gears and while the car still started fine it wouldn't respond at all when I pressed on the gas. It is an automatic if that makes a difference. HELP!!! I don't want to get screwed at an automobile repair place.
If it runs fine and does not respond in any gear than it most likely dumped the transmission or transfer case. It's an automatic transmission and therefore uses a cooler built into the radiator to cool it's fluid. If the transmission was overheating due to a major failure(which obviously you have) it may have been boiling the water in the radiator as well.
The cut and dry of it is that you are facing replacing or rebuilding the transmission or transfer case. Okay, there is a very small chance that it broke the output or input shaft, or that the torque converter self-destructed.
